A promissory note, signed in the text and completely drafted in the hand of Thomas Hancock, 1 page, 4.5 x 7 inches, written at the height of the French & Indian War, September 15, 1759, Boston, in full: "I promise to pay to Thomas Hancock Esq. on order in three months from this date forty six pounds lawful money, value received, with lawful interest for the same till paid." Endorsed by Eleaz Burt agreeing to the terms. Boldly written; light folds and minimal foxing. Very good condition. Uncle of the signer John Hancock, who raised the later from the time he was seven years old. Thomas built his fortune as one of the most successful smugglers of cod, tea, molasses and rum into Boston thanks to lucrative contracts with the British government during the Kings War and the French and Indian War, making him one of the wealthiest men in Massachusetts.
