Description:

Two page autograph land claim on folded lined blue paper. A Land claim in the Union Township, Trinity (Humboldt) County in California dated February 10, 1853 (8 x 10 1/2 inch) and signed twice by Daivd Leeper (1832-1900). It is also signed by H.H. Janes, Justice of the Peace. Leeper was in California from February 1849 to 1854 prospecting around Redding Diggings, Hangtown, and the Trinity River and later lumbering near Eureka. He later wrote an account of his experiences in ARGONAUTS OF FORTY NINE (first edition done in 1894). The document deals with a 160 acre land claim one mile southeast of Eureka, California. Evidently, Charles McKinney was selling land he received as a stipend for his services during the war, but could not afford to keep it.
