About this Item

1 page on onionskin typing paper, 10.25 x 8 inches, Wembo Nyama, Congo Belgian Africa, May 19, no year, circa 1935, with diamond-shaped diagram referred to in the letter drawn over the text. Written from his missionary trip to Africa, in part: ".As I sit here in the night I can hear the drums across the swamp - It is a funeral. I went over this afternoon. About a dozen of the man's wives were sitting by the crude box in which he was to be buried. When they put him in the ground they start a dance and go on for days." Accompanied by a newspaper clipping heralding his return. Natural folds and several light creases; still very good condition. American jazz trombonist and evangelical Christian, one of the first white musicians to play with black musicians and to admit the African roots of American music such as jazz and gospel.
