About this Item

8°, contemporary crimson quarter morocco over red pebbled cloth boards with blind-stamped ruled borders (only the slightest wear; small stain to front cover), spine richly gilt with raised bands in five compartments, gilt title in second compartment from head, docorated endleaves, text block edges sprinkled. In fine condition. Remains of black on green printed paper binder's ticket in upper outer corner of front pastedown endleaf. xi, 503 pp. *** The exact dates of Antonio Prestes, a native of Torres Novas, are not known, but seven of his plays were acted in Lisbon and collected by Afonso Lopes in 1588 in the Primeira parte dos autos e comedias portuguesas. The volume also included two plays by Camões, and one each by Anrique Lopes, Jorge Pinto, and Jerónimo Ribeiro. Only the plays by Prestes are published in the present volume, along with an interesting introduction by the editor, Tito de Noronha. They are the "Auto da Ave-Maria," "Auto do Procurador," "Auto do Desembargador," "Auto dos dous irmãos," "Auto da Ciosa," "Auto do Mouro Encantado" (2nd part of the "Auto da ciosa"), and the "Auto dos cantarinhos".In the "Auto da Ave Maria" the Devil speaks both in Spanish and Portuguese. All the other characters in Prestes' plays speak in Portuguese, with the exception of an enchanted Moor in the "Auto do Mouro Encantado". There are, however, frequent Spanish words and quotations. The plays appear to have been written and performed in the period between 1555 and 1587. They provide an excellent picture of the times and of middle class daily life, especially the position of women, the bribery of judges and lawyers, and the aping of foreign manners.*** Innocêncio XXII, 348; see also I, 241-2, VIII, 288. See Bell, Portuguese Literature, pp. 160-1; also 19, 166; Teresa Araújo in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 390-1; and João Alberto Ferreira in Biblos, IV, 435-8.
