Book Description [Women Aviatrix] Legislative barriers as well as social and economic factors made it nearly impossible for women to participate in early aviation, making these photos rare glimpses into the lives of women who overcame the odds. Archive of10 black and white silver gelatin photographs. Dating from the early days of aviation the 1920s to post WWII 1950s. Photos measure 2.75" x 3.5" - 8" x 10". An early 1920s photo shows a woman seated in the cockpit of a plane with one hand on the wheel and one rested on the exterior of the plane, a formally dressed woman stands poses by the plane and a male aviator. Another early photo is from 1923 and depicts a female pilot in full leather uniform in front of a Curtis biplane on the tarmac. A real photo post card from the 1940s shows a woman wearing aviation gloves with a jacket swung over her shoulder and smiling in front of an aircraft with the caption "Reno Browne. Queen of the Westerns." A 1942 photo shows WAAC Aviatrix and Third Officer, Dorothy Mitchell of San Francisco in WAAC uniform entering the cockpit. A press release from 1929 shows six women wearing aviation goggles atop their head, all wearing dresses and heels but one who is in a leather aviator jacket, slacks, and boots with a cigarette in hand. The article pasted en verso is titled "Birdwomen Organize in Boston", and showcases New England's first aviation club for women and names them from left to right as "Olivia Keet Matthews, Betsy Kelley, Mrs. Mildred Chase, Mrs. Mary Bacon, Mrs. Joan Fay Shankle, and Mrs. Teddy Fenyon. Another interesting photo shows two women in day dresses, Isabel McCraye of Lemon Grove, CA, and Betty McNeil of LaMesa, CA exiting a Beachcraft Bonanza after crossing the finish line within a flying competition held in Westfield, MA, 1955. With a mix of individual portraits and group shots of women aviators standing in front of their crafts or behind the cockpit, this collection documents some of the first woman aviatrix. Minor chipping on some edges, but overall, all original silver gelatin photos in this archive are in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 20190
