About this Item

Small 8vo. Stiff pictorial wrappers. (10pp). Illustrations. Near fine. Sole printing of this souvenir booklet for this all-star celebration of the beloved Chicago clergyman's 55 years of service. Bradley (1888-1983) was a noted and beloved Chicago personality, author and speaker, for many years pastor of the People's Church. Attendees and speakers included the Governor Otto Kerner, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, Illinois Senators Everett M. Dirksen and Charles H. Percy, philanthropist W. Clement Stone and surgeon Karl A. Meyer, among other luminaries. Daley's mayoral proclamation making October 20, 1967 "Dr. Preston Bradley Day in Chicago" is illustrated. Alongside the menu are comments from Stone and newspaper columnist Herb Graffis. This lovely copy includes a fine autograph addition: Tipped in at front is a Typed Letter Signed from Bradley, 1p, 5" X 7", Chicago, IL, 1954 February 4. Addressed to "dear Francesco," Mrs. A.E. Nielsen (1888-1969, Chicago author whose books include "The Sands: The Story of Chicago's Front Yard" (1948), "Marked Corners: A Three Act Play About Young Abraham Lincoln in Indiana" (1954), "The Collected Poetry of Francesca Falk Miller" (1956) and others). Very good. Faintly soiled. On letterhead of "The Peoples Church of Chicago," Bradley chats about his daily TV show and answers a query about a toastmaster: "My suggestion would be either Harry Hansen or Christopher Morley, both of whom are in New York and are good friends of mine, and I think they would come. My preference would be Christopher Morley, as he would make an excellent toastmaster." Boldly signed in full. Among the many notable speakers on the program's itinerary is Ralph G. Newman (1912-2000), founder of Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, from whose collection this comes. Newman served as publisher for several of Miller's books. Most unusual.
