The series aims to provide non-Japanese scholars with an outline of the most noteworthy Japanese research in the major disciplines. Social sciences and humanities are dealt with in alternate years. Volume I, Part 1 (1974) surveyed publications in the social sciences primarily from 1969 through 1972; Volume I, Part 2 (1975) presented works in the humanities from 1970 through 1973; Volume II, Part 1 (1976) contains important books and articles in the social sciences published between January 1973 and December 1974. Accordingly, this volume continues bibliographical information on works in the humanities published from 1974 through 1975. Volume II, Part 2 covers seven disciplines; history, intellectual history (shisoshi), language, literature, religion, art and archaeology. Each section begins with an introduction providing general background on works in the field and annotation on content, followed by a list of representative studies that came out during 1974-75. We have included substantive comment on as many selections as possible, but unfortunately not all the titles in the bibliographical list could be touched upon in the text. The names of authors have been romanized according to the Hepburn system, and a tentative English translation has been made for each title to facilitate use for non-Japanese researchers. The purpose of these volumes is to present works published by Japanese authors in the Japanese language; for detailed coverage of English language materials on Japan, we recommend the bibliography published by the Association for Asian Studies in the United States. Seventeen scholars, each an outstanding specialist in his field, selected the publications for inclusion in the bibliography and wrote the introductions. They are: Professors Akiyama Terukazu, Arima Manabu, Chijiwa Itaru, Imaizumi Toshio, Ishii Susumu, ltd Takashi, Kanai Seiichi, Kubota Jun, Mayuzumi Hiromichi, Mikami Tsugio, Nomoto Kikuo, Oishi Shinzaburo, Shiraishi Yoshihiko, Taguchi Eiichi, Tamaru Noriyoshi, Tamura KSichi, Yamamoto Takeo, and Yoshida Shoichiro.
