Bérmunkás is a Hungarian journal, out of Cleveland, that was launched by the Industrial Workers of the World, and produced for the Hungarian-American working class, with the goal of promoting industrial democracy. The publication ran from 1912 to 1946. There were three distinct waves of Hungarians who immigrated to Cleveland between 1870 and 1956. Hungarians who first arrived inhabited the easternmost part of the city, which became the Buckeye Road Hungarian neighborhood, as well as a smaller settlement on the near west side. Cleveland's Hungarian immigrant population grew from 9,558 to 43,134 by 1920. By the 1930s many Cleveland Hungarians were assimilating to the American way of life, but many retained their native tongue and customs. At this time, numerous 2nd-generation Hungarian-American youths were active in the community, forming their own social and civic groups. During the Depression, organizations helped the community through difficult economic times, including charity committees, homeowners' associations to try to put a stop to evictions, and several labor organizations, including a Hungarian-language section of the IWW. A faction of Hungarian tradesmen from the Buckeye-Woodland neighborhood helped to spearhead organizing drives in a number of northeast Ohio plants, including the Ohio Foundry Co., the Draper Mfg.
