About this Item

London: Pushkin Press, 1930. First Edition Second Printing (1946), Near Fine cloth, in edgeworn pictorial dustwrapper. Translated from the Slovene by Sidonie Yeras and H. C. Sewell Grant. Illustrated throughout with beautiful scratchboard illustrations by Nora Lavrin. Author preface. Introduction by Janko Lavrin. A 19th Century novelette or short novella which reads like a Slavonian version of Kafka's "The Trial" with a climax reminiscent of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." Yerney is a Don Quixote-like village naif increasingly exasperated in his quest for justice. Cankar is regarded by many as the greatest writer in the Slovene language, influenced by the fin de siecle Decadence and earlier Symbolist movement. Bookseller Inventory # 5660
