About this Item

Original Wraps. 16mo. [4] pages. 16cm. First edition. Program for the Sunday evening basketball game and dance sponsored by the Young Menís Hebrew Club. This piece is a single folded leaf, with printed pages on all sides. Red paper with black ink. Contains a score card for the basketball game with advertisements for local businesses, many of which were located in what was the largely Jewish neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Newark. The Young Menís Hebrew Association building listed on the card was built and dedicated in 1924 after a successful fundraising campaign started in 1920. An advertisement for The Slifer Typewriter Co. That was founded in 1932 (as per records from catalogs at the Smithsonian Institute) further clarifies the date of this piece. The Young Menís Hebrew Club was an athletic organization that regularly participated in social and charitable events with the Young Menís Hebrew Association, and was active in early anti-Nazi organizing. In 1934 the Club took on official sponsorship of an anti-Nazi group called the Minutemen. The Minutemen supported boycotts of German products and often worked with other groups to raid meetings and publicly attack fascist anti-Semitic American groups, such as the Friends of New Germany, organizing in Newark. ("Naziís in Newark" Warren Grover, 2003) Subjects: Newark, New Jersey. YMHA. Jewish Community Centers. OCLC lists none. Minor shelfwear and light discoloration to foredge, otherwise very good + condition. Rare. (AMR-43-35). Bookseller Inventory # 31470
