About this title

A real village with houses grows up on an island where people first spent summers in tents, being attracted by the charm of the place.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3 As explained in an ``About the Story,'' Oak Bluffs, Mass . , is the model for Bayberry Bluff. The area was first used as a get-there-on-a-ferry daytime only campsite, but the allure of the environment motivated some visitors to stay overnight, then over weeks and eventually to stay as year around residents. The text is not much fuller than this review, but the 14 double-page illustrations that create the visual narrative are considerably more detailed. Text is deadpan, but the pictures are replete with particulars of persons, animals, and things that are lively and lighthearted and exude an aura of soft humor. Lent again uses his cardboard cut technique, a means of shape generation that produces isolated flat shapes edged, frequently, in a white line. The result leans to the decorative, to solid figures and wonderfully ornate buildings, and stage-set landscapes: such solid design, such assuredness in the placing of wave's curling against a bluff or the bird's perching on a building's unfinished roof. What a delightful way to see history happen, to engage sensually in learning about the inevitable march of ``progress.'' Kenneth Marantz, Art Education Department, Ohio State University, Columbus
