About this Item

Oxford: Basil Blackwell & Mott, 1945. A very good copy in tan cloth with gilt spine lettering, a little wear to the boards and a little soiling at the extremities, with bumped ends, in an unclipped dustwrapper with foxing, chipped edge but no loss of material, and a reproduction of one of Bone's seven color illustrations illustrating his translation. An introduction by the author is included in which he comments (among other things) that "I have not left the poem unintelligible, and the complaint made by William Morris's translation that it was more difficult than the original will not be made of mine." So here is the foundation of Anglo Saxon poetry in 84 pages. You English lit majors can compare Bone's rendering of the classic battle between Beowulf and Grendel with that of the recent translation by Seamus Heaney. Bookseller Inventory # 3443
