1st Printing. Signed. 350 pages. Published in 2001. The fifth volume in the ongoing series. Each annual volume is self-contained and stands on its own. Yet it also benefits from being part of the now-celebrated and avidly collected Series. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Most of the Series' First Edition print runs were softcover originals only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Otto Penzler's "The Best American Mystery Stories 2001". An impressive collection. "Did you hear the story about the guy who shows up at his brother's house, after a long absence, with a van full of wedding dresses? It's called 'Family' by Dan Leone, and is one of the twenty unusually excellent tales of crime and mystery collected by Lawrence Block for this annual celebration of the form. Block's dictum for the genre is very simple: A crime or the threat of a crime is the central element. Block notes that two-thirds of his selections were by writers whose names were new to him" (The Washington Post). That means Lawrence Block took his responsibility as editor (as opposed to bestselling writer) seriously, and did an outstanding job. Among the Series thus far, this volume has the most number of largely unknown and immensely talented new names. An absolute "must-have" title for mystery and thriller genre collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed on the title page (in black fountain pen) by Otto Penzler and (in blue fountain pen) by Lawrence Block. It is also very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on his Contribution by T. Jefferson Parker. They are all signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This Hardcover Edition sold out shortly after publication and is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such multi-signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Twenty of the finest American writers of the mystery/thriller genre of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER T. JEFFERSON PARKER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0618124926. About this title:

Synopsis:

Since its inception in 1915, the Best American series has become the premier annual showcase for the country's finest short fiction and nonfiction. For each volume, a series editor reads hundreds of pieces from dozens of periodicals, then selects between fifty and a hundred outstanding works. That selection is pared down to the twenty or so very best pieces by a guest editor who is widely recognized as a leading writer in his or her field. This unique system has helped make the Best American series the most respected -- and most popular -- of its kind.

THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES 2001 will thrill fans of all reaches of the genre. The legendary mystery writer Lawrence Block offers chilling tales from best-selling writers as well as talented up-and-comers. Ranging from traditional detective cases to psychological studies to atmospheric scene-setters, these stories illustrate the variety and broad range of styles, plots, and characters Block admires in the genre. With Block as guest editor and a stellar roster of suspense veterans and rising stars, the 2001 edition will delight mystery afcionados and all lovers of great fiction.
