About this title

This novel is a compelling story of a Buddhist monk who undertakes a seemingly impossible task in order to fulfill his spiritual purpose to help those he had previously harmed. It shows how, in the process of converting his karma, he also transforms the lives of others. It is based on the life of an actual monk who lived during the 18th century in Japan and shows that no matter what a person has done, including murder and robbery, he can completely turn his life around and know the greatest fulfillment---the direct experience of the Eternal, the Buddha Nature---and can then commit his life to selfless service because it is his nature to do so.

About the Author:

Rev. Jisho Perry, translator, was ordained as a Buddhist monk by Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett in 1971. He received his seminary training as a parish priest and teacher of Buddhism at Shasta Abbey and has been recognized as a Master of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives. Prior to becoming a monk, he studied at the University of California, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1962 and a LLB (Bachelor of Law) and JD (Doctor of Jurisprudence) in 1966. He has been a Prior of the Santa Barbara Buddhist Priory, a temple of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives, since its founding in 1979. He is a senior disciple of the late Rev. Jiyu-Kennett, who was the first Abbess of Shasta Abbey and founder of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives and the Santa Barbara Buddhist Priory.
