SERIES: Clark's foreign theological library ; ; new series, v. 42, 44; Though he was a proselytizing Protestant, Delitzsch (1813-1890) was dedicated to studying Judaism, influenced by Julius Fuerst. He knew Hebrew and was familiar with the Talmud and medieval Jewish literature, and taught theology at Leipzig, Rostock, and Erlangen. Though he had an "affection" for Judaism and fought against anti-Semitism, he also published pamphlets, founded a magazine, and began the Institutum Judaicum in Leipzig all with the goal of conversion to Christianity. His Biblical commentaries, including on Isaiah, are rooted in philology, and took a conservative, traditional approach.
