Description:

COMPLETE FOUR VOLUME SET. Full title: A BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF ENGLAND, FROM EGBERT THE GREAT TO THE REVOLUTION: CONSISTING OF CHARACTERS DISPOSED IN DIFFERENT CLASSES, AND ADAPTED TO A METHODICAL CATALOGUE OF ENGRAVED BRITISH HEADS: INTENDED AS AN ESSAY TOWARDS REDUCING OUR BIOGRAPHY TO SYSTEM, AND A HELP TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF PORTRAITS: INTERSPERSED WITH A VARIETY OF ANECDOTES, AND MEMOIRS OF A GREAT NUMBER OF PERSONS, NOT TO BE FOUND IN ANY OTHER BIOGRAPHICAL WORK: WITH A PREFACE, SHEWING THE UTILITY OF A COLLECTION OF ENGRAVED PORTRAITS TO SUPPLY THE DEFECT, AND ANSWER THE VARIOUS PURPOSES, OF MEDALS. London: Printed by W. Nicholson, . . . for W. Baynes, . . . ; W. Clarke, . . . ; J. White, . . . ; T. Egerton, . . . ; Hanwell and Parker, Oxford; Deighton, Cambridge; and J. Archer, Dublin., 1804. Fourth edition "carefully revised and corrected" (as stated upon title pages). All hardcovers; H 23cm x L 14.25cm. All four volumes with red-ink oval discard stamp of the Providence Athenaeum upon title pages. Poor condition. Volumes retain original paper backed boards but with spines perished; all four have a simple but cosmetically unattractive repair of paper wrapped over boards in a sort of crude dust jacket keeping the boards and the bound quires together. Cover papers are well age toned and moderately soiled; handwritten ink titles and shelf numbers on the paper spine panels; deep chipping to said paper at spine head of Vol. 1 with tearing along joints. Athenaeum shelf numbers in ink at top edge of each front free endpaper and again on each title page verso; no other institutional marks readily apparent after a quick perusal. Each with deckle fore-edges and deckle bottom edges. VOLUME I: [16], i-xxii, 1-407 pages; binding split between frontispiece portrait and title page. VOLUME II: [4], 1-436 pages. VOLUME III: [4], 1-420 pages; binding split evident between half-title and title page. VOLUME IV: [4], 1-446, [6] pages; features Index for all four volumes; six pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Some light toning to interior leaves of the four books but negligible foxing. All four should be re-cased but still a complete antiquarian set. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 5.75 pounds (2.6 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail. Bookseller Inventory #
