Their like is not found anywhere else in the world. They vary in shape, the most sought after being the round pearls that are seldom less than eight millimeters in diameter. None of the imitation pearls produced elsewhere can be compared to the brilliant, inimitable pearls of Polynesia. The Government of Polynesia has taken steps to protect the existing oyster beds and will spare no effort to maintain the quality of pearl production, which by 1983 had become Polynesia's leading export.
