About this Item

Fine in brown cloth with black lettering and design on the front panel and spine. The binding is firm and there are no markings in the text, which is bright and crisp. The dust jacket by the noted artist Aaron Douglas is very good or better, just showing some light rubbing on the front panel. Douglas has signed the front jacket panel, in the plate, with his initials A D which are visible at the lower left and lower right corners. This jacket is extremely rare and we have come across only one other copy, at the Beinecke Library at Yale. Thurman and Douglas had been collaborating on various projects for several years, including the literary magazine Fire!! A Quarterly Devoted to Younger Negro Artists, and Harlem, a play about the black belt that was given at the Apollo Theatre. Thurman's The Blacker The Berry is considered to be one of the most important novels of the Harlem Renaissance and has been republished as part of the recent two-volume collection of Harlem Renaissance works in the distinguished Library of America series of classic American literature.
