About this Item

Lawrence, W. J. NO. 5 BOMBER GROUP R. A. F. London: Faber and Faber, (1951). First Edition. A Fine copy with a still-fresh unrubbed silver gilt spine in a crisp Near Fine example of the elusive (at least in nice collector's condition) dust jacket. The DJ is price-clipped and has a tiny bit of soil to the light-colored back panel else this is really a super copy. This story of No. 5 Bomber Group based in Lincolnshire during 1943-1945 is compelling reading. The author (an R. A. F. officer himself) used first-hand reports, and "secret documents" (which probably were still secret in 1951) to fully tell the story of this exceptional Bomber Group's accomplishments including tales of precision and accuracy by its Lancaster Bombers, but also gives insight into to the particular style of improvisation and experimentation that led to its remarkable successes dam-busting, sinking the Tirpitz, and so many other less known but equally crucial raids. The well-written foreword is by Air Chief Marshal Sir Ralph Cochrane and the book contains nicely detailed photograph sections. Bookseller Inventory # 002048
