About this Item

SCARCE First edition in book form, the story having appeared with black and white illustrations only in "Little Folks" magazine in 1900. With six plates in colour and 12 full-page black and white illustrations by Arthur Rackham, the colouring of the six plates done by Harry Rountree. 8vo, original light brown cloth lettered decoratively in dark brown on the upper cover and spine, the upper cover with a pastedown colourplate illustration by Rackham, rear board with publisher's logo, t.e.g. [xii], 130pp. An essentially fine copy of this scarce title in the Rackham oeuvre, fresher then any other available copy we know of, the paper with no spotting whatsoever and just a hint of the common toning to the prelims, the cloth fresh and clean with the pastedown in pristine condition. A VERY SCARCE ARTHUR RACKHAM ILLUSTRATED TITLE, RARE IN FINE CONDITION. It is also an unusual one. The work was originally published with Rackham's drawings in black and white in "Little Folks" in 1900. By 1910 Rackham was a busy artist in high demand having already produced some of his most famous works such as "Peter Pan". Rackham consented to allow another artist go back and colorize some of the magazine plates for this book edition, an extremely uncommon situation all around. The artist was Harry Rountree, who had been working with "Little Folks" since at least 1903. Rountree produced well-liked cartoons for the magazine Punch from 1905 to 1939, and also created advertising, posters and book illustrations for writers such as P. G. Wodehouse and Arthur Conan Doyle. Bookseller Inventory # 27264
