1st Printing. Signed. 72 pages. Published in 2010. Collection of color photographs on subject. Tom Millea's breakthrough work in color. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Tom Millea and Joel Friedlander: Oversize-volume format. Red cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Tom Millea. Essay by James Enyeart, one of the most important figures in the history of photography. Printed on Mohawk Superfine stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in a lovely collectible edition, Tom Millea's "The Book of Palms". Still lifes in color, all of them of the palm leaf. Subtle and exquisite abstract studies, there is, in James Enyeart's illuminating appreciation, "an inherent symphony of visual orchestration being played out in these palm photographs. The forms and shapes that Millea has liberated from the plant itself, an object of Nature, can find their aesthetic DNA both historically and in the most post-modern of works. A rich tableau of Modernist love for ideal abstractions of Nature and at the same time reveals incongruous metaphoric worlds of flesh, life, and death" (James Enyeart). Millea exhibited with Edward Steichen and Paul Caponigro at the beginning of his long career, in 1968. Millea's career is instructive insofar as photography itself is concerned: It is the one medium (the other being cinema) that continually depends on advances in technology. He is the photographer-as-craftsman/technical wizard who eventually becomes (in his own eyes, and ours) the photographer-as-artist/visionary. He spent thirty-five years working exclusively on the challenges of the Platinum Print process. Photographic technology then lagged behind artistic vision and needed someone obsessively dedicated like Millea to master and perfect it. By the time he saw the artistic potential of contemporary digital technology, the latter was already so far ahead of most photographers' vision, its aesthetic possibilities unrealized. The overwhelming majority of digital photographs are "been-done-before", generic images. The challenge for an ambitious photographer today is to find his or her singular "voice" (or "consciousness", as Millea puts it). The result for Millea is this book whose title is, of course, a play of words on The Book of Psalms. As a collection of digitally enhanced images, The Book of Palms is an astonishing achievement, artistically and even spiritually. For starters, one does not normally associate "still life", "abstract", and "metaphorical" with "digital", as one must with Tom Millea's ground-breaking work. An absolute "must-have" title for Tom Millea collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in brown pen-marker on the front free endpaper by the artist/photographer: "After all these years our friendship endures. This book is my journey to consciousness; more than mere photographs. Love, Tom". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient is named, and is unmistakably personally known to Tom Millea. This title is a contemporary photography book classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The few other copies available online have serious flaws. A rare signed copy thus. 32 color plates. One of the finest American artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy.
