About this Item

12 volumes. First edition thus, the first Nichols/Smithers "Library Edition", with all passages restored which had been omitted from Lady Burton's edition of 1886. 8vo, original black cloth with extensive all-over gilt paneled decoration in Arabic design on upper boards. The spines handsomely gilt lettered and decorated with an Arabic tool, t.e.g. A good set for reading or as a candidate for restoration or binding purposes, the text complete and in solid condition, the prelims lightly mellowed as is usual, otherwise still very fresh, the bindings somewhat worn or chipped at the edges, corners and spine tips, but the gilt Arabic motif on the upper boards still very bright and fine on all volumes, Vol. 12 with additional wear and loss to the cloth at the spine. THE FIRST OF SMITHERS FINE "LIBRARY EDITIONS". Smithers published several different editions of this set in 1894 and 1897. This is the first of the library editions, published in 1894 and without the illustrations included in the later editions. The original edition was published in Benares in 1885 and printed by the Kamashastra Society for private subscribers only. Lady Burton's edition of 1886 omitted 215 pages from the original text. In this edition, the omitted material has been restored. Edited by Leonard Smithers, who hoped that this edition would permit Burton's translation of the famous tales to "take its proper place on the library shelf alongside Cervantes and Shakespeare."
