Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card set of eight (8), USA. Judy Holliday, Broderick Crawford, William Holden, dir: George Cukor, Columbia. Judy Holiday created her role of the challenged Billie Dawn on Broadway and playwright Garson Kanin was paid the highest fee ever to that point (one million dollars) when he sold the rights to Columbia. Holiday won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a highly competitive year. An abusive millionaire tycoon (Crawford) hires a tutor (Holden) to teach his girlfriend (Holiday) language and culture. Tutor and pupil fall in love. Director Cukor rehearsed the film as a play and the actors gave several live performances so as pacing could be worked out. Oddly, producer Harry Cohn considered a host of other actresses including Rita Hayworth, Celeste Holm, Marie McDonald, Paulette Goddard and Ida Lupino for the role of Billie before saying OK to the role's creator, Judy Holiday. This set was very lightly used with just three of the cards having very minor top corner pinholes, a bit of uniform shelf edge wear at the top border and just one card displaying a bit of discoloration along the left side edge. Some really key fun scenes are presented. ABOUT FINE. Bookseller Inventory #
