About this Item

FIRST EDITION. #45 of 785 numbered copies. Autograph Letter Signed by Sullivan dated June 20th, 1896 tipped to front free endpaper. Bookplate of John Thomas Lee. The ALS on a piece of letterhead bearing the address "10 Charles Street", consists of the poem "Song from the Lost Rembrandt", which appears in a short story by that title (authored by Sullivan), originally published in 1887 in SCRIBNER'S magazine. It is probable, but not certain, that the bookplate belongs to antiquarian and bookplate collector John Thomas Lee [1875-1953 (from 1919-1953 in Chicago)]. He was an accountant by profession, but had an avid interest in American history and wrote several pieces dealing with the Old Northwest and the Santa Fe Trail. He was a member of the American Antiquarian Society and his obituary appears in their Proceedings, vol. 63, no. 2, pp. 290-91 (1953). Large 8vo. viii[4]3-108[6]p. Frontispiece plus 26 tissue guarded drawings with captions by Lester G. Hornby. Brown paper covered boards elaborately stamped in gilt with a vignette of Old North Church in an oval on the front cover. Top edge gilt. Very minor wear to extremities, gilt bright, minor stain to very top of title page and next page (paper clip rust?), all illustrations present with intact tissue guards, else near fine/ No jacket.
