About this Item

The program for the 1890 cremation and burial of the frshman textbooks "Bourdon's Elements of ALgebra" and "Minto's Manual of English Prose Composition". Single sheet, folded. 4 pp. From 1878 until 1903 freshman students at the Univeristy of California, Berkeley, held a ceremony, modeled after a tradition at Yale. At the end of the year the dispised freshman textbooks were burned and the ashes were buried by the class with ceremony. As the years past, the ceremony became more elaborate with a lenghty procession through campus and a giant bonfire. Joy Lichtenstein's novel "For the Blue and Gold" (1901) contains descriptions of one such burial: "The trouble began when the invitations were issued- a grewsome thing, with a black border and a picture of a devil standing over a coffin, pitchfork in hand. It was for the most part worded in dog Latin. Each freshman was to get some to send to his friends. The sophomores tired to get hthem so as to have burlesque substitutes printed to send to their friends". By 1903, the event had gotten out of hand and high spirits, spilled into the streets of Berekely. Private property damage and injuries among the students finally made it necessary for the University to cancel the event. Dated at the top of the front cover, in pencil, "May 29, 1889". Fine.
