About this Item

Grosset and Dunlap, issued from 1912 Dillingham first edition plates.Near Fine hardcover in spine-faded otherwise Very Good dustwrapper, cowboy and horse silhouetted against sunset. Old gift inscription on front flyleaf. A brutal killing in the Arizona desert sets off this western action thriller. Raine was one of the greatest of the early western genre writers. His main publishers were Dillingham, Doubleday and for the longest time Houghton Mifflin, a publisher that did not have a western line per se but took on Raine for broader merits. With 85 books about the west, four of them nonfiction, he might be mistaken for a pulp hack. But the honesty, knowledge, and intellectuality that underlay his action and suspense stories raises his work above the common horde. Bookseller Inventory # 5354
