About this Item

This entry has (1) the ORIGINAL Thomas F. Wise and Henry Buxton Forman forgery of Brother and Sister and (2) a Facsimile copy of that forgery The original forgery is 16 pp. pale blue wrappers, black interlaced rules, untrimmed pages which are larger than the wrapper. The date on the title page is 1869; it was actually printed in 1888 "It is the first pure creative forgery" by Wise & Forman, Barker & Collins A Sequel to an Inquiry, p. 135 The facsimile varies in some details: title precedes half-title & the corners of the rules are fleur-de-lys. It is presumed that this second forgery was published in the U.S. in the1920's as was AGATHA, our entry No. 30285. The original forgery is FINE. The wrappers of the later copy are faded otherwise FINE, pages are unopened. Of the original forgery "Thirty copies in all are recorded" Carter & Pollard An Enquiry Into The Nature Of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets. p.191- 193. Baker & Ross, George Eliot A Bibliographical History, B6.1 & B6.2. Parrish, p.24 does not note that the 1869 imprint is a forgery. There is a note with the forgery "This copy is apparently genuine. It cost £16-10-10". A catalogue entry is present which attributes the work to Eliot. It was purchased from the bookseller James Tregaskis. The last Tregaskis catalogue apparently was in 1936. There is a note with the second forgery : "This copy is apparently a reprint. It cost $22.50. (purchased from Christian Gerhardt)" Gerhardt (1866-1955) was a New York City Bookseller. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 30200
