Cambridge, Massachusetts: Candlewick Press, 1993. American First Edition. Fine cloth in Fine dustwrapper. A classic collection of literary ghost stories. This is surprisingly rare as a fine first edition, as nearly all copies on the market are either reprints or exlibs or both, or paperbacks. This is a truly premium copy of great stories, and while John Gordon's novels are mainly young adult literature, the stories are sophisticated for all ages. Bookseller Inventory #
Synopsis: A haunting treasury of ghostly tales about wronged spirits out to exact a terrifying revenge includes the story of a pregnant teenager who mysteriously disappears and the appearance of an eerie, glowing baby.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 9-10-The title story is about a middle-aged murderer who builds a Guy Fawkes Day bonfire around his pregnant, teenaged lover's corpse. A small someone comes out of that fire to exact retribution for the man's crime. The other four stories deal as well with the two subjects most fascinating to YAs- sex and death. Gordon uses these themes carefully. He is always teasing, always hinting, but never blatant or graphic. Each story hums with tension, and each character has a distinctive voice. The plots are tightly structured and never lose the tautness and delicious chill so critical to the success of this genre. The British flavor of the writing should present no problem to eager teens looking for lightweight thrills.
