About this Item

First American ediiton (with the statement "Second Edition" on the half-title page as is correct). Dark olive green cloth lined and lettered in red and black and with front cover design of a four of spades and eight of diamonds (this cover design differed from the British edition which bore a generic shield in red and gilt). 312 pp. plus publisher's ads at rear. Frontis and five additional full page color plates plus one additional three-color plate following the last page of text; title page printed in orange and black with two-color drawing of a coquettish young lady with parasol and various gambling implements. A tight example, modest rubbing to the tips and to the playing card design. A novel of an English family that vacations on the French coastal town of Cabourg; complete with pretty young things, upper crust gambling establishments, romance, melodrama. etc. The American edition is the preferred edition thanks to the playing card cover design.
