In green cloth boards with gilt North Wind to front board. (Gilt to spine is just about gone.) Will close its own text block from rear but not from front; call it "very good minus" with modest rub to corners. Spine rolled about 3/8ths-inch. Undated; we offer an estimated date of purchase as 1905, which happens to be the date of the author's death. This COULD be the 1901 American first, though from the uneven inking it would seem to have been printed from well-used plates. Address of the publishers Routledge is given as 27 & 29 West 23rd Street, New York. A Scottish churchman, author MacDonald (1824 - 1905) launched a school of complex fables for children, often dealing thoughtfully with serious matters -- in this case, death. Previous owner Genevieve Burnell has written her name to FFE in script in fountain pen; Miss Burnell (1894-1961) was the daughter of the teacher of religious philosophy George Edwin Burnell and of Mary Lamoreaux Burnell. Genevieve (as Genevieve Burnell Forgey) wrote a biography of her parents as well as "The Golden Measure of Love" and "The Golden Thread of Reality," and established a Foundation after 1948 to continue their teachings from their rather elegant home in Los Angeles. 378 pp. Association copy. Reduced from $315. Bookseller Inventory # 002816
