About this Item

Originally serialized in "Good Words for the Young" magazine in 1868 and published in 1871, this fantasy tells of the travels of Little Diamond with Lady North Wind through the night. As they fly though the world North Wind does good and what seems like evil possibly representing pain and death in God's eternal plan. While it is considered to be one of the author's masterpieces I think this went right over my head when I read it. It did, however, have a profound influence on the writings C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis Carroll and others. This copy title page verso reads: "Copyright, 1909, by J.P. Lippincott Company" and one of the front flyleaves states it as the "Twelfth impression". Verso gives list of ""Stories All Children Love". Twelve colored plates by Maria L. Kirk. Black and white drawings at beginning of each chapter. The red cloth cover has gilt lettering and the embossed red, black and white illustration of Little Diamond and his companion, heads bowed against a strong wind. Corners a little bumped. The spine's gilt lettering is worn and tarnished. A bit faded and some small flecks of white. Extremes lightly bumped. Top edge of textblock is gilt. Endpapers are blank. My mothers bookplate is on the front pasted endpaper. Shadow of the tipped in clipping of George MacDonald at his desk. The loose front endpaper is covered with a poem written in ink and in pencil the inscription : "Rose Ellen. Dec. 25, 1923". Binding is tight. Of 352 pages twenty-five show some minor light smudging or staining. More pronounced stains on pages 252-257. If you enjoy symbolism and theology in your fantasy reading this would be a have-to-own.
