About this Item

This book contains some very interesting insights to an author and publishing. 1- There is a type-written and glued-in 1" & 1/2" x 4" note that is signed by the author and located just above the First edition and letter line ABCDE. The gist of the note is "This is an ADULT and not a JUVENILE book, though YOUNG ADULT could have been added to ADULT. Harcourt apologized." She yellow high-lighted part of the note. She went on to explain the problem and that she was understandably angry. 2- The book was inscribed by Ilse-Margret Vogel to Wolfgang Otto (the artist?) dated Oct. 19, 1995 on the dedication page opposite the publication page where she placed her note.("But this copy is for Wolfgang Otto - with good wishes." signed by author). 3- There were 2 copies of reviews of her book (very complementary). One stated "Dear Ilse, Thought you might enjoy reading this wonderful review!" and was dated 10/29/92 and signed Tim. It was from Publishers Weekly, Oct. 26, 1992. The other sent by the same person and highlighted is from The Book Report, Vol. 12, No. 1, 1993 Only one flaw in this very unique book, there is a wrinkle in the bottom right corner of front cover about 2" long, but no corresponding crease inside on end paper. A beautiful copy. Author ran and directed art galleries and is married to an artist. Bookseller Inventory # 000084

About this title

Synopsis:

The author of Tikhon describes what it was like living in Nazi Berlin during World War II and her experiences as a member of a network of friends who secretly worked against Hitler and risked their lives to help others survive.

From Publishers Weekly:

This outstanding work examines an underrepresented subject: the attitudes and actions of anti-Nazi Germans. Vogel, a German artist "approaching 30" in the last years of the war, describes how she and her friends in Berlin resisted Hitler in ways small and large--and always risky. Feigning a severe limp as part of an elaborate scheme to avoid being drafted, Rudolph shares books by "forbidden" authors like Kafka; during an air raid, Oskar forges ration coupons and government documents at a printing press in his building's bomb shelter; and the author herself sweet-talks the police in order to give the outlaw hiding in her apartment enough time to escape. Riveting as these episodes are, the most striking aspect of Vogel's work is her complete candor. Uninterested in convincing the reader of her heroism, she relates moments of both fear and fugitive glee, and openly examines her problematic loyalties. Her resolutely undramatic tones enable her to incorporate otherwise sensationalistic themes (wartime promiscuity, the comforts of drink) as inevitable parts of the landscape of a nightmarish time. Ages 14-up.
