This is a "Fair" ex-library copy, stamped "Discard" after having been committed to "Reference Storage" by the Los Angeles County Library District. Typical library attachments glued to both front endpapers. Spine has been covered with maroon fabric tape, with title and Dewey number then painted over in white ink. Interior hinges supported with gray fabric tape, and we suspect that tape conceals an earlier repair, in which the book was pierced four times with new strings bound through. (If we're right, that part of the process was well done -- the book is holding together well, and there's plenty of white inside margin remaining for legibility.) All plans and folding maps are in place and attached, though the large fold-out map of St. Petersburg at page 87 has been reinforced with Scotch "Magic" tape to verso where it was literally falling apart at the seams. There is also a one-inch hole to text area of pp. 87 and 88 (immediately following said map), removing a dozen lines of map references to pg. 87, and also impacting (that is to say, partially removing) about 10 lines describing the Baltic and Nicholas (St. Petersburg) railway stations to pg. 88. The 1914 is the first and only original Baedeker guide to Russia published (almost entirely) in English. War soon ensued, followed by the Revolution, and as subsequent casual tourism was presumably judged unlikely (in addition to the fact any German visitor attempting to make maps would probably have been shot), this became one of the four rarest and most collectible of the series, in any complete condition. (We say "almost entirely" in English because -- while the resort is spelled "Yalta" in the text here, it's "Ialta" on the interior maps, with both that town and Sebastopol perched between the "Monts Iaila" and the "Mer Noire." Whereas on the large, fold-out, frontispiece map, that body of water becomes the "Schwarzes Meer" -- easily enough understood, but still not technically "English.") ABE requires us to list as either "hardcover" or "softcover," though of course these original travel guides have somewhat flexible red covers. 590 pp. including index. Reduced from $330.
