About this title

Synopsis:

Ballade was commissioned and written for cellist Andre Emelianoff, as an homage to Brahms. It suggests dark colors, compact rhetoric, intricate counterpoint and the formal rigor closely associated with the master composer. Premiered on June 1, 2004 in New York City, this work will add an old world feel to your concert or recital.

Review:

Commissioned by Andre Emelianoff as an homage to Johannes Brahms, Ballade is described in the score as suggestive of Brahms in its ""warms colors, compact rhetoric, intricate counterpoint, and formal rhetoric."" The piece opens as a lyrical song in 3/4 with piano and cello in dialogue, developing into an appassionato, increasing in intensity and dynamic with Brahms-like eighth notes versus triplets in the piano. A pianissimo section follows, marked Delicato, con tenerezza, with the opening theme returning, this time in double stops in the cello line. Then a Subito allegro, scorrevole section follows in 6/16. The piece concludes with a restatement of the opening Dolce cantabile, again in 3/4. This is very effective and compelling as an homage to Brahms."" --A.C.F --American String Teacher, February 2012
