About this Item

A massive manuscript tome! Folio. Full morocco over boards (29 cm x 40 cm), stamped in gilt, with "P. B. & Sons / Deeds" gilt-stamped on spine. Contains more than 200 pages of handwritten notes and maps, plus laid-in material, regarding property laws and sales of breweries in New York and New Jersey. First 40 pages detached, laid-in; corners and edges of boards scuffed. Overall, very nice, with numerous maps and surveys, legible handwriting throughout (from many different hands), and laid-in material offering a range of letterheads and type-faces from lawyers' offices, land surveyors' offices, real estate representatives, advertising agencies, and more. A rich specimen of local history. Ballantine Brewery was founded in 1840 in Newark, New Jersey, by Peter Ballantine, and originally incorporated as the Patterson & Ballantine Brewing Company. Around 1850, Ballantine bought out his partner and purchased land near the Passaic River to brew his ale. His three sons joined the business and in 1857 the company was renamed P. Ballantine and Sons. The name would be used for the next 115 years – even under the leaderships of George Frelinghuysen, then the Badenhausen brothers – and would enjoy tremendous success for much of the brewery’s long history. Ballentine, for example, was the first television sponsor of The New York Yankees. In the 1960s the company went into decline. The breweries were closed in 1972 and the brands acquired by the Falstaff Brewing Corporation. By the late 1980s, Ballantine Ales were produced by a number of different outsourced companies. Since 2005, the Ballantine Ale brand has been owned and marketed by the Pabst Brewing Company, which in turn outsources the brewing to the Miller Brewing Company. Bookseller Inventory # D2980
