About this title

Synopsis:

A picture storybook for children and all those who love music and dance. Inspired by the Book of Genesis from the Old Testament - the "Creation Story" - and a real live "prima ballerina", it’s a story that will warm your heart and inspire little children to dance. Gentle, but masterful pastels, illustrations of Earth’s creatures and Heaven’s angels by talented artist Nuri Gurera, combine to make this a delightful book for the young and the young at heart.

This publication also contains a section at the end on dance and ballet- and the condensed, but still amazing story of Mimi Grikes, the Prima Ballerina of the Latvian National Opera prior to the invasion of her county by the Nazis in 1939, and her immigration to Canada where she opened a ballet school for young children.

Printed on 140M Euroart Silk makes this a durable book that you will treasure as a keepsake for your children and your grand-children. An innovative approach with a traditional bent that speaks to the dancer within us all. Available in economical, but durable lamobonded paper cover or even longer-lasting hard-cover binding.

About the Author:

Ray Saunders, an avid international traveller in pursuit of his favourite hobby - snooker, was almost an international citizen at birth. Ray’s mom, a war bride, emigrated from England to Canada via a trans-Atlantic liner landing at Pier 21 in Halifax just in time for the delivery. His early years were spent in the Halifax South-end where he attended Tower Road School. His frequent day-dreams in school were not wasted, but instead may have been a forerunner of what lay ahead - travelling and writing.

He graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School (Halifax), where he played competitive football and volleyball, and later from the De Vry Institute in Toronto. Ray especially enjoyed his English classes where he was encouraged by his teachers to write short stories and poetry. This love of writing; early Bible studies at St. Paul’s in Halifax; as well as stories and photographs of a young prima ballerina, Mimi Grikes, would combine in later years to inspire Ray to write his first children’s book: Ballerina, the dancing angel.

While Ballerina is Ray’s first children's publication, he has already completed a detailed instructional book on the game of snooker: the subject of one of his life-long hobbies. He has successfully competed both nationally and internationally, participating in the Canadian Snooker Championships for the past 10 years. Ray was runner-up in 1996 and represented Canada at the World Championships held in New Zealand that same year. In fact, a "welcome dance" presented by Maori children (called a Haka) is remembered by Ray as another influence related to his writing of Ballerina. He is also currently the captain of the Nova Scotia International snooker team.

Snooker has also become an integral part of his life, taking him to many parts of the world as a competitor in the International Snooker League. Many of Ray’s short stories, often valuable lessons on life, were gathered during his international travels and will form a significant part of his forthcoming instructional book due for publication in the new millenium.

A chance meeting with a ghost in Devon, U.K. and kissing the Blarney Stone in County Cork were among those experiences which helped to embellish and polish his story-telling - and which has ultimately led to the writing of two books. His next venture continues his love of children’s stories; a book based on his observations while raising two cats: Clancey and Elvis.
