About this title
Dust jacket notes: "Amidst the turbulent artistic movements of our century, the work of the French painter Balthus stands apart - an enigmatic world unto itself. Born Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola in 1908 and raised in the company of Gide, Rilke, and Bonnard, Balthus has been a torchbearer for realism for over fifty years. Realistic, however, is hardly the word to describe the hushed universe he created, peopled by children on the brink of maturity, whose unmistakable Balthus poses and proportions lend surrealistic and often erotic overtones to intimate interiors. Still living and working in Switzerland, Balthus has been acclaimed the last of the great European painters. Admirers of this major artist will applaud this book for finally bringing to Balthus's drawings and watercolors the attention that they deserve. Among the many works reproduced here for the first time are Balthus's earliest known watercolor, an unusual sequence of illustrations for Wuthering Heights, rare theater and costume designs, still lifes, and landscapes of an almost oriental delicacy. Foremost are the often provocative and always hauntingly beautiful studies of young women. As Giovanni Carandente explains in his detailed introduction, countless early drawings were lost or destroyed before Balthus came to value drawing as a medium in its own right. (Reputedly, the floor of his studio was littered with discarded drawings which he would walk over while working on the next painting.) Those studies that remain give testimony to the creative process behind his paintings and their disturbing magic. Combined with the later finished drawings, subtle and pure as those of Ingres, they bring to light crucial aspects of Balthus's genius hitherto unrecognized." Hardcover, 10 x 11.25 inches, 120 pages, illustrated with 27 full-color and 111 black and white plates.
