About this Item

312 pp, acknowledgments, Introduction: Old Ponce de Leon and Our Mr. Janvier by Gerald W. Johnson; Foreword; list of b&w illustrations; 16 chapters; index. First Edition, 1933. "Virginia-born Meredith Janvier (1872-1936), after graduating in law from the University of Maryland, practised in a Baltimore firm for thirteen years, whereupon he abandoned law to become a photographer. He was also an amateur strongman. Some twenty years later he again changed professions, becoming a manuscript and rare-book dealer. A contributor to the Baltimore Evening Sun, he published two collections of essays, Baltimore in the Eighties and Nineties (1933) and the posthumous Baltimore Yesterdays (1937), the latter with a preface by his friend H.L. Mencken. 'In these recollections my endeavor has been to reconstruct the past and bring to mind in some degree, to persons about my own age, a mementary vision of the life and manners in Baltimore as they were during the score of years from 1880 to 1900.'" Minor edge wear, else, Pristine Interior. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Black cloth with gilt seal on front board, gilt lettering to spine, and pictorial endpapers. Size: Large 8vo. Bookseller Inventory # 004039
