About this title

Synopsis:

This excellently crafted play features many of the traditional commedia dell arte characters in a lightning speed plot with more twists than a corkscrew. A faithful commedia farce with knockabout physical and verbal delights, accompanied by as many and varied sound effects devices as can be dreamed up. Simple, tourable set. Traditional commedia costumes, or pieces. CAST: 1F; 7M; 1F or M with doubling or up to 12 with roles distributed.

The opportunistic Brighella, spies old, miserly Pantalone chasing Harlequin and threatening to throttle him. Brighella quickly distracts Pantalone by thinking-up a quick plot to earn a bit of bribery income. First, he convinces Pantalone that he s killed Harlequin and collects a handsome sum to do away with the body. Meanwhile, sweet, beautiful Columbine is heartsick at the prospect of being married off to old Pantalone. Brighella convinces Harlequin to stand in for young Columbine in a fake wedding with Pantalone. This promises to produce a large dowery from Columbine s ward, presumably to be split between Brighella and Harlequin, while freeing Columbine to run off with her love, Leandro. But Pantalone is privy to this plan and concocts one to out bamboozle the two of them. The wedding occurs, and identities are well concealed. Not even the audience knows the true bamboozler until the bamboozling end. Approximate Running Time: 65 mins.

About the Author:

Michael Elliott Brill has labored for The Muse of The Theatre since his graduation from The High School of Performing Arts (of Fame fame) in 1957. He spent the next twelve years as an actor in New York City and on tour with several companies. In 1970 he moved to Seattle WA, where he formed his own performing troupe, The Motley Mummers, creating original material for the performers and touring Washington State with grants from the Seattle and King County Arts Commissions. During its two-year existence, the Mummers won numerous awards for excellence and originality. In 1973 Michael became Artistic Director of Seattle s Bathhouse theatre, remaining there for seven years, acting, writing and directing for the Enchanted Theatre Company. In 1976 his poetic drama, The Masque of Beauty and the Beast, won the prestigious Moss Hart Memorial Award, which was presented by Stephen Sondheim. In 1978, his commedia, Bamboozled! and his musical fantasy, Mo One will Marry a Princes with a Tree Growing out of her Head!, along with ...Masque... were published by the Anchorage Press. In 1978 ...Princess... won first place in an International Children s Theatre playwriting competition. Michael has worked extensively as Actor, Director and Playwright for over forty years, winning numerous awards for excellence in all three areas of his work and traveling to far away places with strange sounding names: Tunungayuslok Island, Labrador; Oudsthoorn, South Africa and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala (to name three.) He is the author of eighteen plays and musicals all of which have received numerous productions in the United States, Canada and Great Britain. The television series, The Fabulous Follies, which he wrote and directed (39 episodes of a sitcom/variety show) is still playing in some Scandinavian markets.
