About this Item

Includes AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED laid in from Ruth Bowman to Patrick McCaughey, with mention of Barnett Newman. The ALS, on yellow paper (18 x 13cm) with printed letterhead "From the desk of Ruth Bowman" is dated Sat, April 19 (1969/1970?), is written in black ink, & reads in full: "Dear Patrick, We had a lovely Saturday morning and lunch with Liz Summons who spoke enthusiastically of you and your wife last week in London. I told Barney about you today; he says he looks forward to meeting you. Thank you again for everything. Wally sends his best. Cordially, Ruth B.". Ruth Bowman is an art historian, curator, & educator (born 1923). The mention of "Barney" in the ALS is no doubt Barnett Newman. The recipient of the letter, art historian Patrick McCaughey, was the former Director, National Gallery of Victoria, & this book comes from the library of his daughter, Kate McCaughey. Liz Summons, also mentioned in the ALS, wrote the text for the Eric Thake photography book ("An Individual View") which Patrick McCaughey wrote the preface for. The letter is dated April 19, without mention of the year, however it would've been either 1969 or 1970 - the book was published in 1969, but Newman died in July 1970 & was still living when this letter was penned, so either April 1969 or 1970. Illustrated with b&w and colour photographs and illustrations. In-depth expansive essay by Thomas Hess. Includes exhibitions list (both one-man & group), plus notes for a bibliography on Barnett Newman (which includes writings by Newman, articles & references, plus television interviews). From rear cover: "One of the most important artists of our time, Barnett Newman has played a major role in the development of abstract color field painting. He was among the first painters to make monumental abstract paintings, and his color-saturated canvases and use of the stripe have become almost legendary. Newman's great and intimate lyrical paintings anticipated and influenced many artists of the fifties and sixties, who acknowledge him as a master". Bound in original pictorial wraps. Front cover illustration is "Treble" by Newman (1960, oil). Printed in the USA. Slight handling wear & light spotting to cover, small pin hole to upper edge of the ALS, otherwise a nice clean tight solid softcover copy. 92pp. Unique related ALS laid in, an interesting association between art historians/curators with mention of the subject of this book, Barnett Newman. SB-48. Size: 21.5 x 17.5cm. Bookseller Inventory # 003695
