He established first academic Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in India at PGIMER. Chairperson of Pediatric Intensive Care Chapter of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (1996-2000) and Chairman of Pediatric Section, Indian Society of Critical Care 2002-03 and the first National Convener of Pediatric Advance Life Support Courses of IAP, 1995-98. He represented India as Ambassador at the Inaugural Assembly of World Federation of Pediatric Intensive Care (WFPICCS) at Montreal in 2000 and at World Congress, Boston, June 2003 and at present Asian Representative and Executive Council Member on the Board of World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care. Delivered invited talks and lectures at more than 150 National and International Conferences including the World Congress of Pediatrics, World Congress of Infectious Diseases, World Congress of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and Latin American Congress of Intensive Care. Published more than 270 research papers in indexed journals, 52 chapters and edited two books on Intensive Care. His original research contribution is in the understanding of body water and fluid and electrolytes therapy in critically ill children, acute meningitis and pneumonia, and neonates, use of inhaled steroids and MgSO4 in acute asthma, diazepam infusion in refractory Status Epilepticus, intensive care of Meningitis, and pathogenesis of Oxytocin induced neonates jaundice. Associate Editor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and many others. Reviewer for several prestigious Journals including BMJ, Critical Care Medicine, Arch Diseases in Children, etc. Awarded Claris Critical Care Oration Award of Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine ? 2003 for outstanding contribution to critical care, and Fellowship of National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS) in 2005. Fellowship of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (FIAP) in 1994. Won SS Manchanda Gold Medal of Indian Academy of Pediatrics 1976, Gold Medal of National Neonatology Forum in 1993 and several Best Paper awards. This book covers the basic concepts of Pediatric Intensive Care in an easy to understand format. The focus of the book is on fundamental principles of critical care which are applicable to all critically ill children irrespective of primary disease. These principles are applicable to care of all sick children whether being cared, in an emergency room, a general ward, a nursing home or a PICU. The emphasis is on systematic approach to management. Priority is given to details of intensive care therapies and monitoring; relevant pathophysiology has been dealt with briefly. A chapter detailing guidelines for setting up a Pediatric ICU and an Appendix with practical details of some common procedures is specially included. The book will be helpful companion for all the Pediatric residents and Pediatricians working in the PICU.
