About this Item

First edition. Hardcover in dark green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt. Top edge gilt. 253 pp. Very good, cover gilt bright but spine gilt dulled as is the top edge gilt. Previous owner's notation front free endpaper. Collection of spurious letters (Taber actually references literary forger Thomas Chatterton in her foreword) "found" in an old brass studded trunk in the recipient's country home. The writer, "Bathsheba", was apparently the daughter of strict Quakers who lived in a nearby farm. "Bathsheba must have been a child of overflowing sesibility and overmastering inquisitiveness, qualities so forein to her paents' nature that they conscientiously but injudiciously repressed them on all occasions.but [they could not repress] this jolly sprite." Not reprinted that we know of and quite scarce in the original edition. Bookseller Inventory # E17562
