About this Item

COOK, ROY BIRD. The Battle of Carnifex Ferry. An Address at Carnifex Battlefield, Keslers Cross Lanes, West Virginia, Before Five Thousand People Assembled to Commemorate the Seventieth Anniversary of Battle, September 10, 1931. [Caption title, n.p., n.d., 1931?] Octavo.[ Original pamphlet sewn into modern acid-free paper wrapper with modern printed title label, nice, pages untrimmed. (8)pp. Shetler: West Virginia Civil War Literature #143. Carnifex Ferry was a strategic crossing of the Gauley River 8 miles southwest of Summersville, WV. The forces of General John B. Floyd defending a camp on the north side of the river above the ferry and numbering 1700+ men, held off a much larger attacking Federal force of General Rosecrans. Then under the cover of darkness, Floyd finding his position untenable made a brilliant nighttime retreat across the river, saving his army. Two future presidents fought in this battle on the Federal side: "Major Rutherford B. Hayes" and private William McKinley from Poland, Ohio (p.7). Bookseller Inventory # 8207
