Later 3/4 maroon morocco and marbled boards, gilt-decorated raised spine bands, black morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, original printed wrappers bound in. Wrappers lightly rubbed, else very good or better. Dornbusch III, 1573. "A detailed but painfully defensive tract on the Confederate operations at Fair Oaks by the man who temporarily commanded the army" Nevins I, p.43 Presentation inscription from the author on front endpaper, "Col. Charles C. Jones, Jr., LL.D. with complements [sic] of Gustavus W. Smith." Charles Colcock Jones, Jr., was the premier Georgian historian of the 19th century, a noted collector of books, manuscripts and autographs, and an amateur archaeologist. His many books include histories of Georgia, and of the South in the civil War. He was a noted defender of the Lost Cause. Jones served under General Gustavus Smith at the Siege of Savannah.
