About this Item

Being for the most part Contributions by Union and Confederate Officers. Based upon the Century War Series edited by Robert Underwood Johnson and Clarence Clough Buel. New York: Thomas Yoseloff (1956). Four volumes, cloth. Pp. xxi, 750; xix, 760; xix, 752; xix, 835. Illustrated with engravings. Spines lightly sunned, but still a very good copy. Please Note: Later reprints are perfect bound, not sewn as this is. Originally based on a series of articles appearing in Century magazine beginning in 1883 and published over the next three years. Editors of the magazine had convinced a surprising number of respondents among Civil War generals still living to contribute an article each on principal battles in which they had engaged. Contributors included Generals McClellan, Pope, Buell, Rosecrans, Porter, Franklin, Burnside, Sherman, and Grant on the Union side, as well as Johnston, Beauregard, Longstreet, Hjill, Hood, Wheeler, and the raider Mosby from the Confederate ranks. Only a few such as Sheridan, Early, and Admiral Worden refused. The series proved immensely popular, and was later issued in parts, with about a third more new material, at the rate of two a month beginning in 1887. Published at a very critical moment in time: "Five years earlier the passions would still have been too hot, five years later the generals lost in aged garrulousness." (Roy F. Nichols, in the Introduction). Bookseller Inventory # 9479
