About this Item

Early edition. Vols. 1-3 carry copyright dates of "1884, 1887", while Vol. 4 carries these dates plus 1888. There are no dates on the title pages, however the "Editor's Note" in Vol. 4 indicates that each volume was re-edited prior to publication in book form and that Vol. 4's editing "was completed in January 1889", so publication is presumed to be that year, or shortly thereafter. Bound in embossed olive cloth over boards with bright gilt titling on spine and front panel. All four volumes in Good condition, with all pages clean and intact. Hinges on all four are broken but intact. Those of Vol. 4 have been professionally repaired. There is some very faint foxing on the endpapers only. The landmark publication, of articles which previously appeared in THE CENTURY MAGAZINE. Profusely illustrated throughout with black & white engravings, drawings, diagrams, maps, and some--but, oddly, not many---photographs. All four volumes include the "Corrections" (to the original periodical series appearance). Vol. 1-750 pages, v. 2-760 pages, v. 3-752 pages, v. 4-836 pages, w/both the Index to all 4 volumes and the Supplemental Index. All four volumes protected with a clear archival cover. Please Note: Extra shipping charges will apply due to the size/weight of this set, and will be quoted upon ordering for prior approval. Bookseller Inventory # 501008
