About this Item
The Bear With the Orvis Rod(Fifth Edition) by A.D. Read was published by the Author, Manchester, Vermont, in 1975. Not an ex-library copy, this 9" X 10", 31-page, softcover offering is in VG condition. Other than some perhaps ever-so-slight yellowing of pages, and some extremely spotty, light scuffing on front and back cover sections, this 37-year-old book is quite well preserved. This is the intriguing tale of Bromley Bear, resident of Bromley Mountain, not too far from Manchester, Vermont. Having learned how to read from observing the new ski trail signs in his territory/range, and how to speak English by "repeating what the skiers had said to his subconscious in the winter", Bromley the Black Bear moves comfortably back and forth from the bear world to the people world. The purpose of this story is to explain to the reader just how Bromley has come to possess a floppy fishing hat with an Orvis Record Catch Club Pin attached to same. I'll say no more of the story, but will mention, lastly, the many, wonderfully complementary black and white Sketches/Drawings of A.D. Read, which give faces to the various animal, and human, characters encountered within this tale of fishing for salmon in Canadian waters(specifically, the Restigouche River). You can discover, if you so choose, how Bromley ends up in Canada, and with a brand new rod and reel, to boot. Thank you!. Seller Inventory # 005678
