About this Item

States "First Edition . . . MCMXXIV / Edition de Luxe . . . MCMXXVII." Thus, we have here the 1927 "de Luxe" second edition, with charming postcard-sized Helen McKie illustrations tipped in (mostly black & white, but four in color, and all in place.) "This edition limited to 1,000 copies for England and America," and in an elegant hand the author has numbered this copy 401 and signed it "Wren" (last name only.) There is also an elegant little NON-authorial 1931 gift inscription to FFE. This may once have been an elegant "Deluxe edition" (about 60 percent of the gilding to top page edges remains), but it simply wasn't well stored, and at this point it's no longer a very attractive book. It is, in fact, an unattractive book. Boards (and particularly the red cloth spine covering) considerably faded, spotted, discolored, and worn. Some foxing to preliminary and final pages. Minor dampstaining only (yes, this is odd, but we've seen it before) to the edges of the captioned tissue guards which guard each illustration. Book "good only." Following the 579 pp. of text we find a three-page musical score for "The Song of the Legion / March Theme of the Paramount Picture Beau Geste / Music by Frank Tours, James Bradford, and Hans Spialek / Lyrics by Edward Lockton / Copyright 1926." This at first seems odd, since the Jesse Lasky / Adolph Zukor 1926 "French Foreign Legion" film starring Ronald Colman, Victor McLaglen, Noah Beery, William Powell and Mary Brian is generally referred to as a "silent." In fact, however, by 1926 the major studios were distributing scores to theaters for live orchestra or organ accompaniment. Reduced from $190. Bookseller Inventory # 003487
