About this Item

Full leather bound book is square and securely bound. There are corner bumps and some minor scuffs on the covers but the real problem is on the spine. The top inch of the spine is missing, slightly affecting the top line of the gilt title. Other minor damage exists near the center of the spine. The interior of the book Is excellent with slight browning from the ink. The paper is hand laid with chain lines visible -- fairly unusual for this late in the 19th century, The book is written in French with eight gravure engravings. ; B&W Gravures (engravings); 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 382 pages; This is a popular history of France. This copy is of some other interest because of a bookplate and an inscription. The bookplate is that of: "Raglan Somerset de Raglan" with a Coat of Arms, a motto and more information in French followed by the date, 1912. The inscription, written in a flowing hand and dated 1839, begins: "Mr. Dempster's Academy Brighton." What follows is in French, but based on my rough, and I mean very rough, translation, the book seems to have been a gift or prize for a student, "Mme. Someset," which hearkens back to the bookplate. There is almost 80 years between the inscription and the date on the bookplate, so there may be an interesting story here. Some famous Somersets were Barons of Raglan so there may be a connection to a well-known Brtish family. Bookseller Inventory # 8964
