Publication Date: 1784
Book Condition: Good
Book Description London. Printed for G. Kearsley at No. 46 in Fllet Street, 1784. 12mo (in 6s), 175 x 100 mms., pp. [ii], viii, 344, engraved title-page with engraved vignette of Garrick looking (or worshipping) Shakespeare, contemporary tree calf, gilt border on covers, recently rebacked, gilt spine, black morocco label. A very good copy, but without the two/three additional plates called for in ESTC T93849. This appears to be a different edition, or collection, by Kearsley from those in ESTC with a publication date of 1783, where the pagination is , xxiii, , 275 [i.e.251], . The last three pages in this volume of 344 pages are adverts for Kearsley's imprints, including one for David Hume's Essay on Suicide. In fact, Kearsley's edition of Hume's Essays on Suicide and the Immortality of the Soul was published in 1789, and had been preceded by a spurious edition in 1777 and publication in 1783 by M. Smith. The copy in ECCO of this 1784 imprint does not have the last two pages of adverts, and it is possible that Kearsley re-issued his 1784 text without the plates but with the additional two pages of adverts in or after 1789. The Folger copy has the two additional pages. ESTC T93849 locates copies in BL, Birmingham Central; Folger, McMaster, Illinois, Virginia, Canterbury Museum. Seller Inventory # 8886
